Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured north of Soputa on 27 November 1942 during the Japanese retreat from campaigns in the Owen Stanley Ranges. This intelligence report describes the progress of the Japanese advance in the Philippines and the various battles that took place throughout the archipelago between December 1941 and March 1942. It contains descriptions, maps and diagrams of enemy dispositons, details of engagements with Allied forces, position of Japanese forces, information gained from prisoner interrogations, conditions of front line forces, and losses suffered. The report also includes an item from the "Domei News" (a Japanese news agency) that describes the land war in Asia, including a statistical account of losses suffered and gains made during the capture of Hong Kong and the Philippine campaign between the outbreak of war and 3 January 1942. This important document was distributed extensively to Allied command posts in the South West Pacific Area. |
