| Content: | This item is a letter written by YAMASHITA Takeo to an Australian soldier, Mancefield, fourteen years after the Pacific War. After the Japanese surrender, YAMASHITA, a young Japanese naval serviceman, was in a Japanese compound in Manado, and Mancefield was an Australian officer supervising ex-Japanese soldiers. In his letter YAMASHITA recalls the memories related to their friendship and expresses his gratitude to Mancefield for his humane treatment. The letter also mentions a book titled "Southern Cross", which he wrote based on his experiences at the compound and presented to Mancefield. The letter has mimeographed Japanese text on the left side and corresponding typed English text on the right translated by SHIRAI Hideo, who also once served in the Manado compound as a civilian translator. At the time this letter was written YAMASHITA was a police officer. Two photographs of YAMASHITA, one as a young naval serviceman and the other as a police officer, accompany the letter. |
