Content: This item is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese document salvaged from Goodenough Island on 8 March 1943. This is part 2 of a collection of documents taken to Goodenough Island by survivors of Teiyo Maru which was part of a large troop convoy sunk by Allied forces en route to Lae on 3 March 1943. Part 1 was published on 29 March 1943.

This document gives a fragmentary account of the Japanese plans to strengthen their forces at Lae and Salamaua. It contains operational orders, landing plans, embarkation orders and troop dispositons for Teiyo Maru. The item contains diagrams of convoy formation patterns, a pamphlet of instructions to convoy commanders, and disembarkation instructions. It also contains diary extracts from Japanese survivors (WATANABE Ushiro, YAMAZAKI Yasuhira, YAMADO Noburo, KIKUCHI Takashi, NARISAWA Kojiro and AKAGAMI Tadashi) who rowed to Goodenough Island in a collapsible boat. This item contains a sketch map of the Markham River and Lae area.

This document provided important details about the nature and strength of Japanese forces in the area and was widely distributed.
