Content: This item is a collection of service records compiled in December 1942, for soldiers recruited into the army before 1942 (mostly from either Nara or Gunma Prefectures). At the beginning of the collection is a list referring to transfers of soldiers from other regiments to the 238th Infantry Regiment. The personal records consist of a double mimeographed form for each soldier. On the first page, detailed personal information is recorded about the soldier in question, including name, address, religion, pre-recruitment occupation (most of the soldiers recorded here were either agricultural workers or manual labourers) and educational achievements, as well as information about his immediate family connections and socio-economic status. On the back of the form there are spaces for recording the soldier's progress after recruitment, with marks given for specific activities such as target practice, parade, drill, deportment and study. There are also spaces for general comments on the soldier's overall progress and attitude. This item was captured at Finschhafen in April 1944.
