Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 9 April 1945 on Japanese insignia and badges of rank. In comparison to the number of documents supplied to ATIS, very few badges and unit identifications had been received. This report was made due to an urgent need for accurate and complete information on Japanese insignia of rank, unit and personal identifications, and service identifications. It contains information on the removal of insignia; souveniring by Allied troops; uniforms, personal equipment and insignia of the Japanese Army; items issued up to the rank of sergeants; items issued to all ranks; items purchased by warrant officers and officers; civilian employees' uniforms; items issued to privates, non-commissioned officers and probationary officers; diagrams of badges of rank and identification tags, arm bands, courier markings and native identifications. The appendix contains a chart of photographs of captured equipment, uniforms and insignia; sketches of equipment and insignia; reproductions of insignia drawn from captured material and from descriptions supplied by prisoners of war; a chart of the quantity of uniforms and personal equipment issued to non-commissioned officers and privates; a chart showing specimens of all rank badges.
