| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147017 of the 5001 Special Attack Unit, who was captured on 16 January 1944. JA147017, a 30 year old 2nd Lieutenant from Fukuoka Prefecture, was severely wounded during a dogfight off Saidor. His plane crashed into the sea and he was rescued by an Australian destroyer. During the interrogation, JA147017 provided information on unit organisation, movements, Japanese planes, flight formations, and training. He had extensive knowledge of flying because he was an instructor for four years between 1939 and 1943. He was sent from Japan to New Guinea in December 1943. He took off from Wewak on 14 January 1944 and was captured on 16 January. Diagrams on dogfight tactics and flight formations are included. |
