Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Kamiri on Noemfoor Island on 3 July 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a book entitled "Regulations for handling prisoners of war", dated 19 November 1943, a reprint of a Prisoner of War Intelligence Bureau Publication. It contains information on the designation of prisoners of war internment camps, transportation of prisoners of war, work details, control of prisoners at work, payment, determination of rank, allowances, effects of deceased prisoners of war, and hours of work.

This document suggests that the Japanese treatment of Allied prisoners of war was conditioned by possible retaliation against Japanese interned in Allied countries.
