Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 1st Class Private YAMAMOTO Taro of the 144th Infantry Regiment 3rd Battalion, who was captured in Ioribaiwa on 3 October 1942. YAMAMOTO, a 23 year old from Ehime, was a member of the South Seas Force and left Japan in November 1941. His unit completed successful landings in Guam and Rabaul. He landed in Buna in August 1942. He was captured at Ioribaiwa when he was feeling sick and suffering from diarrhoea. YAMAMOTO gave information on the unit organisation of the 144th Infantry Regiment (Kusunose Unit). YAMAMOTO was a member of the Okamoto Unit, 3rd Battalion Artillery Platoon, which belonged to the 3rd Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel KUWATA. YAMAMOTO provided additional information on his voyage from Rabaul to Buna on Myotoku Maru. He saw about fifty Allied prisoners of war at Rabaul. He claimed that there had been no air raids in Kokopo.
