Content: This item is a set of hand-drawn area maps and elevation diagrams that were constructed in 1943 for the 1st Marine Engineer Regiment to provide detailed information about naval routes and secret docking locations in the area between Finschhafen and Ibogi in New Britain, probably in connection with the Japanese fortification of the Finschhafen area in 1943. On the first sheet is an index of the 20 areas covered by the maps which include the western tip of New Britain (Ibogi*, Natamo, Karaiai*, Tsurubu Point*, Sag Sag, Kilige*, Bushing Point* and Marcus Point ), Umboi Island, Sio, the Bumi and Bubui* Rivers, and Finschhafen. Features such as reefs, rivers, mountains and any Japanese facilities such as bases or communications posts clearly marked, and some of the maps also contain instructions for specific missions to be carried out, such as reconnaissance and scout missions on the 6th and 22nd of April. This item was captured at Madang, probably in 1944.
