Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Wakde Island on 28 May 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an extract from a manual entitled "Instructions on the use of smoke candles", issued by Narashino Army School on 10 March 1942. It contains instructions on tying candles to the rear of vehicles, the effect of wind on smoke-screens, use of smoke candles when tanks go into action, wiring diagrams, and techniques for laying smoke-screens. The document also contains a table of specifications for various types of smoke candles .
