Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147574 of the 8th Independent Meteorological Unit (Naval), who was captured on Manus Island on 3 May 1944. JA147574, a 28 year old civilian employee (weather observation technician) from Wakayama Prefecture, was ill with malaria when he was captured by natives. During the interrogation, JA147574 provided information on the strength and organisation of the 8th Independent Meteorological Unit in Rabaul during December 1943, the location of five weather observation units, details of the functions performed by the Tokyo Hydrographic Department, meteorological operations, weather balloons, living conditions in Japan, his attitude towards capture and that even civilian employees came under the same code as enlisted men, conditions at the Zentsuji prison camp, Allied leaflet propaganda that he saw in Rabaul and geographic details of Truk Island and surrounding islands. The appendix contains an organisational chart for the 8th Independent Meteorological Unit (Naval). |
