Content: | This item is a concise operation report of the 8th Area Army, which covers the period from November 1942 to March 1944. The first section entitled "New Guinea Operation" includes operations at Buna, Wau, the Bismarck Sea, Mubo/Nassau, Salamaua, Finschhafen, Saidor and Wewak areas, and air operations conducted by the Army. The second section entitled "Solomon Operation" contains brief reports on Guadalcanal, Bougainville and New Britain Operations. The document discusses the period, units involved, and outcomes of each operation. Reasons for defeat or eventual withdrawals in ill-fated operations are analysed separately. A table included in the document provides information on the number of deaths in major operations conducted by the 8th Army. Approximately 42,000 Japanese servicemen were killed in action in the Solomon/Bismarck area, while operations in the New Guinea area resulted in some 48,000 deaths. |
