| Biographical / Institutional info: | These materials were identified by the University of Melbourne Archives as relating to Australia-Japan relations. The archives were established in 1960 and contain historical material related to the university, various businesses, labour and trade unions, as well as many other topics. |
| Content: | The materials identified in the archives relating to Australia and Japan include correspondence, photographs and personal papers. The Mowsey Inagaki Papers contain correspondence from the registrar of the university related to the internment at Tatura in Victoria of Mr Inagaki, a Japanese language instructor at Melbourne University from 1919. The Jack Kelly Papers and the Leo W Stach Collection comprise photographs taken during and immediately after the Second World War. Jack Kelly was a member of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. His papers include twenty-five photographs taken during this period depicting bombing damage to Tokyo and Hiroshima. Leo Stach was employed by the Natural Resources Section in San Franciso. The six photograph albums in the colleciton include depictions of landscapes, people, building and events in the South West Pacific Area during the war, and in Japan in 1946-1947. |
