| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147823 of the 54th Line of Communication Unit, who was captured at Hollandia airfield on 9 May 1944. JA147823, a 32 year old 1st Class Private from Osaka, was hospitalised in the 79th Line of Communication Hospital due to a leg wound. When the Allies bombarded Hollandia in advance of the landings, patients fled into the jungle. Unable to keep up, JA147823 wandered for two weeks in search of food before being captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147823 provided information on the composition and movements of the 54th Line of Communication Unit, his service experience, living conditions in Japan, his attitude towards other races, the treatment of Allied prisoners of war in the Philippines, propaganda leaflets at Wewak, airfields and geographic features on Palau, anti-aircraft defences at Wewak and Hollandia, and the results of Allied air raids on Wewak (5 January 1944) and Hollandia (after 5 April 1944). |
