Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147587 of the 49th Anchorage Unit, who was captured near Sentani on 3 May 1944. JA147587, a 29 year old Sergeant Major from Yamaguchi Prefecture, wandered for five days in the hills around Hollandia after a naval bombardment, before he was captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147587 provided information on the organisation of the 49th Anchorage Unit, salary details, details of defences at Palau, casualties suffered during an Allied air raid at Wewak on 15 March 1944, conditions in Japan, his attitude towards the war, morale among troops at Hollandia, that he saw no gas equipment in New Guinea, and the location of Allied prisoners of war at Yawara, Moji, Palau and Wewak. The appendix includes an organisation chart for the 123rd Infantry Regiment. |
