Content: | These records consist of official documentation and operations reports from Japanese army campaigns in regions north of Australia. These records either survived the post-war campaign of destruction of official documents, or were compiled in the immediate post-war period by the Japanese Demobilisation Ministry. Approximately 412 items have been identified as relating to campaigns in this area possibly against Australian units. These documents have been catagorised as follows: North of Australia, general (86 records); North of Australia, 2nd Army (215 records); North of Australia, 19th Army (17 records); North of Australia, Borneo (94 records). These records primarily comprise war diaries, battle and operations reports, but also include some reports compiled in the immediate post-war period by the Demobilisation Ministry. Examples of such items include journals and orders from the 2nd Army, and orders for the 35th Division to surrender to Australian troops in Western New Guinea. |
