AWM 096911 (Australian War Memorial)
A group of newly liberated Indian prisoners of war at Kumuia Yama, New Britain, 17 September 1945. Weak and malnourished, the condition of these men reflects the harsh regime imposed upon them by their Japanese captors. While the exact number of Indian prisoners of war who died in New Guinea remains uncertain it is generally agreed that at least some groups of them suffered a higher rate of mortality than their European counterparts.
