August 2004 Dear list member, Thank you for your continuing interest in the Australia–Japan Research Project (AJRP) at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. You have requested that your name be included in a mailing list that will periodically inform users when the AJRP website has been updated. If you have received this email in error, or you wish to be removed from the mailing list, please contact us at ajrp@awm.gov.au Since the last update, the AJRP has focused its activities on producing a book. The online version of the book can be downloaded from the project’s website. There have also been some updates and additions to the Human face of war and database sections of the website, and a new hosting arrangement which has resulted in better performance, especially for Japanese language users. These changes are detailed below. 1. From a hostile shore: Australia and Japan at war in New Guinea From a hostile shore, written by specialists from Australia and Japan, covers a range of topics, including: the overall strategy of the battles; the detail of the air, land and sea campaigns; and stories of the personal experiences in war and the grief of families left at home. The chapters of the book were based on seminar papers and essays previously published on the AJRP website, with some new material specially prepared for the book. From a hostile shore is presented with English and Japanese text on facing pages to emphasise the collaborative nature of the project. We hope the book will encourage readers to look at the war from a cross-cultural perspective, taking into account the diverse human stories that emerged out of this tragic meeting of people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The first printing of the book has been distributed to libraries, institutions and some academics in Australia and Japan. The AJRP is preparing a second printing, which will be made available to the general public. In the meantime, the book’s chapters can be downloaded as PDF (Portable Document Format) files from project’s website. 2. Human face of war The AJRP has added several pages which describe campaigns in New Guinea from 1943 through to the end of the war. The “Human face of war” section of the project’s website is presented both in English and Japanese, and now covers all major campaigns in New Guinea. 3. Allied Translator and Interpreter Service records AJRP staff have added over 1,000 records to our online database since the last update. The records described were produced by the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS), and are from the collection AWM55 held by the Australian War Memorial. These records include reports of interrogations with Japanese prisoners of war, translations of Japanese publications, and reports written by ATIS officials based on intelligence materials. 4. Web hosting A new hosting arrangement for the AJRP website has commenced with Melbourne-based IT firm, Yarra Technologies. This has resulted in significant improvements in speed and performance, especially for Japanese-language pages. Many sections of the project’s website can now also be searched using Japanese characters. Please remember that the main entry point for the AJRP and Remembering the war in New Guinea project, and the pages which should be bookmarked, are as follows: http://www.awm.gov.au/ajrp http://www.awm.gov.au/newguinea Don’t forget that we are always keen to receive any comments about your experience of the AJRP website, your impressions of the contents of the database, or any other general remarks or feedback about the project. Please do not hesitate to contact us by either fax or email.
