September 2003 Dear list member, Thank you for your continuing interest in the Australia–Japan Research Project (AJRP) at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. You have requested that your name be included in a mailing list that will periodically inform users when the AJRP website has been updated. If you have received this email in error, or you wish to be removed from the mailing list, please contact us at ajrp@awm.gov.au Since our last update, staff of the AJRP have worked to improve the project’s website with the addition of several new sections. We are confident that these improvements will enhance your experience of the website and contribute to an improved understanding between Australia and Japan. 1. The human face of war The major update to the site is the commencement of a new general history of the Second World War written by researchers at the AJRP. This online project focuses initially on the campaigns in Papua in 1942 and early 1943. The aims of this project are: 2. Cowra–Japan conversations This new section of the website contains a record of interviews with 16 people who helped shape the special relationship that developed after the war between Cowra and Japan. The interviews were conducted by Mr Terry Colhoun and provide a fascinating glimpse into the attitudes of these Australians to their former enemies, and the attempts to overcome substantial hardships to realise a dream of reconciliation and remembrance in country Australia. 3. Remembering the war in New Guinea This ambitious project has brought together researchers from Australia, Japan, Great Britain, the United States and Papua New Guinea to promote an understanding of the experience of war from the perspective of all involved. The website for this collaborative project, which has been managed by the AJRP, contains historical narratives, thematic essays, seminar papers and interviews, and is illustrated with hundreds of photographs and maps. Go to http://www.awm.gov.au/newguinea 4. Please note that the AJRP will soon move to a new server, resulting in better performance and enabling improved features to be implemented. The address of the site may change during the transition to the new server, resulting in broken links to individual pages which may have been bookmarked. The main entry point for the AJRP, however, and the page which should be bookmarked, will remain as follows: Go to http://www.awm.gov.au/ajrp Don’t forget that we are always keen to receive any comments about your experience of the AJRP website, your impressions of the contents of the database, or any other general remarks or feedback about the project. Please don’t hesitate to contact us by either fax or email.
