AJRP update September 2007

Dear list member,

Thank you for your continuing interest in the Australia–Japan Research Project (AJRP) at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

If you would like to be included in a mailing list to inform users when the AJRP website has been updated, please contact us at ajrp@awm.gov.au
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. AJRP publications
The AJRP has now produced three publications. The most recent is a book version of the translated sections of the Japanese official war history (Senshi sôsho), titled Japanese army operations in the South Pacific Area: New Britain and Papua campaigns, 1942–43. The book was launched in March 2007 by Steve Gower, the Director of the Australian War Memorial.

All AJRP publications are available for free download in PDF format from the project’s website (www.awm.gov.au/ajrp). In addition, the book versions of Japanese army operations and Blankets on the wire are available from the bookshop of the Australian War Memorial, and the Memorial’s online bookshop (www.awm.gov.au/shop). Blankets on the wire, now in its second impression, is also available from the Japanese Garden and the Tourist Information Centre in Cowra.

2. Japanese operations reference page
A new reference section of the website details the first stage of the Japanese campaign in the South-West Pacific Area. Covering the period from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the end of March 1943, this section contains concise overviews of the campaigns, including details of Japanese intentions, movements, and unit deployments. These descriptions are complemented by a series of graphic representations of the campaigns to provide an easily understandable visual reference. The site also contains a detailed listing of Japanese strengths and casualties at the end of the war.

3. Bibliography of secondary sources
The AJRP bibliography, which previously only contained English descriptions of Japanese-language secondary sources, has now been updated to include some English-language works. Several hundred entries have been added, detailing secondary sources related to Japan and Australia at war.

3. AJRP staffing changes
After 10 years with the AJRP, Dr Steven Bullard is moving on to take up a position as Senior Historian in the Military History Section at the Australian War Memorial. His first task will be to write a volume related to humanitarian operations as part of the Memorial’s Official History of Peacekeeping and Post-Cold War Operations project. He will be replaced by Dr Keiko Tamura, who has long associations with the AJRP, having been a founding research officer when the project began in 1996.
