Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Lingayen on 17 January 1945 during the US campaign to recapture the Philippines. This item is a manual entitled "Manual for defense against landings (provisional)", issued in October 1944 by General Staff Headquarters and the Inspector General of Military Training. It contains tactical doctrine regarding the organisation and construction of defensive positions (beach, main line of resistance, artillery and anti-aircraft, mobile attack and reserve). It also contains information on the functions of the garrison unit and components, the role of mobile attack warfare, combat tactics, intelligence, communications, liaison and supply. Six appendices deal with offshore observation, firing against landing craft, organisation and equipment, and shell-proof installations. Tables and sketches provide information on the division defence system, organisation of ground forces, construction duty tables, distribution and type of essential installations, fortification materials, allowance of tools used for fortification work, and time required for procurement of materials and time required for construction of defences. Three appended tables show materials required for construction, concrete required for concrete-reinforcements, and landing craft used by US and UK forces. Two appended diagrams show examples of platoon beach positions and a strong point for mobile attack combat. These general principles were intended for garrison forces on small islands and for forces assigned to defend vital coastal stretches either of islands covering an extensive area or of the mainland. This manual superceded EP-415, "Combat regulations for island garrison forces (Shubi) (provisional)", issued on 25 December 1943 by the Bureau of Education, Navy Ministry. |
