Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147359, a civilian attached to the 49th Anchorage Unit, who was captured by US troops when he swam ashore at Aitape after the canoe in which he and 19 others were travelling was sunk my machine-gun fire from a US destroyer on 23 April 1944. During the interrogation, JA147359 provided information on the organisation of the 49th Anchorage Unit, the nickname for Japanese in-line engine fighters, how he was drafted into the Japanese Army, Allied air attacks at Wewak on 3 January 1944 and a naval bombardment of Wewak Peninsula in March 1944. Attached is a sketch of Wewak Peninsula and the location of Japanese facilities.
