| Content: | These records consist of war diaries, operations reports, orders and memoirs from Japanese army campaigns in New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomons. They either survived the post-war campaign of destruction of official documents or were compiled in the immediate post-war period by the Japanese Demobilisation Ministry. Approximately 663 records have been identified as relating to campaigns against Australian troops. These have been categorised as follows: South East Area, General (259 records); South East Area, Eastern New Guinea (283 records); South East Area, Solomon Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago (130 records). The majortiy of these records are war diaries, but also includes battle reports, orders and other field documents. Examples are orders for the 20th and 51st Divisions, and war diaries for the 65th Brigade in the Bismarck Archipelago. |
