| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 2nd Class Sailor HAMANAKA Haruo of Yayoi, who was captured on Normanby Island on 23 September 1942. HAMANAKA, who was not injured, was as one of a group of seven Japanese prisoners of war captured at that time. A 23 year old from Fukuoka, he was conscripted and posted to Yayoi on 23 October 1942. HAMANAKA was on the bridge as a look-out at the time of the sinking. He drifted to Normanby Island and was treated kindly by the local people. He told interrogators that Yayoi was accompanied by Isokaze, but the latter did not stop to pick up survivors when Yayoi was sunk. |
