Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 3rd Class Petty Officer HANAKI Yoshida of the Kure 3rd Special Naval Landing Party. HANAKI, a 36 year old from Nagoya, who had spent most of his adult life in the Navy after joining in 1927, was captured in Milne Bay on 26 November 1942. He landed in Milne Bay on 1 September, but his troops scattered into the jungle when they were attacked by the Allies. HANAKI spent in total about 50 days in the jungle, trying to rejoin other Japanese troops. He was helped by a local who took him to others and treated him kindly. He asked the locals to lead him to the Australian lines and surrendered. He provided information on his unit's movement, supplies, equipment, prospect of the war progress, and Japanese naval insignia.
