| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Natamo (near Cape Gloucester) in January 1944 during the campaign to capture New Britain. This item is a collection of interrogation reports on American aircrew prisoners of war, extracted from an intelligence report issued between 16 December 1942 and 3 June 1943 by Go Group (Shudan) Staff Secretary. It contains reports from two B-17 engineers, a B-17 pilot and co-pilot, a B-17 tail gunner and a Marine SBD pilot, captured after being forced to parachute or crash during raids on Rabaul. It describes circumstances of capture, personal history and training, route taken from America to the South-West Pacific Area, conditions of airfields, capabilities of the American airforce, organisation of the 5th Air Force, methods of bombing, effectiveness of Rabaul anti-aircraft fire and searchlights, conditions in America and public attitudes towards the war, Australian-American relation,s and Japanese prisoners of war. This item also contains a letter written by a prisoner of war to his wife, which the Japanese had promised to forward. |
