| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 3rd Class Sailor and W/T operator FUJITA Shigeshi of Yayoi, who was captured on Normanby Island on 23 September 1942. FUJITA, who had been shot and had a broken thigh at the time of capture, was a 21 year old sailor from Fukuoka who had joined the Navy at the age of 17. The author of the report wrote that FUJITA was probably tutored in security, as he declined to answer some of the questions during the interrogation, such as the name of the destroyer he was on board. The destroyer, Yayoi, was bombed and sunk on 11 September 1942. He stated that visual reconnaissance was the only method used to detect aircraft. However, he detailed the aftermath of the sinking. He survived on coconuts and potatoes until he was captured. His knowledge in other military areas was very much limited. |
