Romanisation
The AJRP has chosen the Kenkyusha style of romanisation as set out in Kenkyusha's new Japanese-English dictionary, 4th edition, Koh Masuda (editor in chief), Tokyo 1987. Further, we have chosen to indicate long vowels in Japanese with a circumflex (ô), rather than the more usual macron ( ¯ ). This is due to a desire for maximum compatibility with standard Western fonts available on client web software.

Japanese place names are written as in Japanese, that is with long vowels indicated. The exceptions are Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, which are widely known outside of Japan without long vowels.
