内容の概要This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on the bombing of the Terrace Area near Lae, New Guinea. The enquiry was received on 29 September 1943 and an answer despatched on 29 October 1943. Based on a notebook captured at Heath's Plantation entitled "Movement diary", dated 26 August to 8 September 1943, the report lists the records of bombing activity (time and duration of attack, number of planes) for the period 1 to 8 September. The report also refers to a sketch map which suggested that the "Terrace Area" was to the north-east of Markham road and was called "nameless high ground". This area was thought to be occupied by the Sekine Battalion Headquarters, an unnamed infantry regiment headquarters, 2nd Battalion Headquarters, and a signal company or field telegraph unit. Although the documents available to ATIS researchers made no mention of casualties in the Terrace Area, a prisoner of war stated that Japanese landing craft in Lae Harbour were all sunk between 8 and 14 September 1943. An intelligence report from Moto Group for 6 July 1943 stated the headquarters was destroyed and that the commander, Major SUZUKI, had died during a heavy raid on 5 July.
