内容の概要This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Japanese casualties and the psychological effect of Allied weapons. The enquiry was received on 23 September 1943 and an answer despatched on 17 October 1943. Based on a survey of current translations and interrogation reports, ATIS researchers divided the research report into two sections, "Casualties caused by various Allied weapons" and "Psychological effects of various weapons". They contain extracts concerning the general effectiveness and psychological impact of Allied mortar fire, bombing, strafing, artillery fire and rifle fire. The emphasis of the recollections contained in the ATIS report is that the constant Allied bombing and strafing had the most sustained impact on Japanese morale. Mortar fire and the intensity of US artillery was also greatly feared by Japanese troops. The extracts selected for this report relate to operations across the South-West Pacific Area, particularly New Britain, Lae-Salamaua, Buna and Guadalcanal.
