| Content: | This item consists of letters and drafts of letters from the Chief of Staff of the South East Area Army to his counterpart in the 8th Military District. The letter dated 6 April 1946 requests an increase in the number of defence lawyers and interpreters for war crimes trials. A request to this end was originally made on 19 March by General IMAMURA and approved verbally by the Commander-in-Chief of the 8th Military District. With reference to the imminent transfer of all Japanese servicemen to the 5th and 10th Camps, the letter dated 19 April discusses the amount of food to be taken when war crimes suspects are transferred to these camps. The sender proposes to standardise the volume of rations to be carried in order to ensure that sufficient food would be available immediately after the transfer. The item includes both a draft (in Japanese) and a carbon copy of the original (in English) of each letter. The item also includes a draft (in Japanese) of a letter sent on 17 April. The sender requests the Australian forces to order the heads of camp groups to provide personnel who would be suitable to act as interpreters and typists for war crimes trials. Names and ranks of candidates are mentioned in the letter. |
