Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for civilian employee CHINEN San'ichi who was captured in Basa on 19 December 1942. CHINEN, a 31 year old civilian employee from Okinawa, was wounded during the evacuation to Basa. CHINEN was recruited in Palau as a labourer for road construction with the incentive of good wages. After being shipped to New Guinea, his section, which consisted of 80 men including 14 Koreans, went as far as Papaki, but was ordered to retreat to Basa. During the interrogation, CHINEN provided information on Palau, as his knowledge of military matters was limited. |
