Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA148034 of 9th Fleet Headquarters, who was captured at Wari (Manokwari) on 23 May 1944. JA148034, a 20 year old Leading Seaman from Saga Prefecture, and his companions became separated from their unit during the retreat from Hollandia after Allied landings on 22 April 1944. Natives deceived the group by offering them food at a place where US troops were waiting. During the interrogation, JA148034 provided information on his naval training, Rashin Naval Base (in Korea, near Seishin), Japanese shipping, officers in the 9th Fleet Headquarters, mine warfare, convoys between Saeki and Palau between 21 November and 1 December 1943, a convoy between Palau and Wewak in December 1943, his service experience, morale, conditions in Japan, his attitude towards the war, AND exposure and response to Allied leaflet propaganda. The appendix contains a map of Rashin Naval Base in August 1942 and a map of Koror Island indicating the basic Japanese installations. |
