Content: This item contains a draft and a carbon copy of a letter from the Chief of Staff of the South East Area Army to his counterpart in the 8th Military District. The carbon copy of the letter dated 6 April 1946 is in English and is accompanied by a draft in Japanese. Attachments to the Japanese draft provide a brief history of the 229th Infantry Regiment. The item also includes a letter from the 5th Camp explaining that a mistranslation resulted in the retention of several navy units for alleged involvement in war crimes. In the letter the sender attempts to clarify that the 229th Regiment was not involved in the Malay operations. He also explains that the 34th, 211th, 212th Construction Units and the 8th Yokosuka Special Ground Unit are retained due to a mistranslation of the term 'Naval Civil Administration.' The Japanese forces translated it as civilians attached to the Imperial Navy and reported to the Australians that the above units contained civilian members. There was an allegation that the Naval Civil Administration (Kaigun Minseibu) had been involved in war crimes.
