Content: This item is a report on discussions between the Commander of the Working Groups and Major William regarding the supply of clothing to Japanese servicemen. In reply to Major William's questions, the Commander of the Working Groups explained the distribution of clothing after surrender. Major William expressed surprise that the Japanese forces had retrieved clothing previously distributed to servicemen in Rabaul so that enough clothing could be sent to fellow servicemen in Bougainville and New Guinea. The Commander of Working Groups explained that it was only fair to do so, since no clothing had been forwarded to these areas for three years due to the control over sea routes by the Allied Forces and Japan's lack of transport vessels. When Major William mentioned that the clothing of Japanese servicemen working for the Australian forces seemed to be in good condition, the Commander replied that the Commander-in-Chief had suggested that the best available clothing be provided to those servicemen in order to maintain the dignity of Japanese soldiers.
