Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) combined interrogation report for 54 Javanese prisoners, who were captured in Korako in April 1944. These prisoners were among approximately 300 rice farmers from Java transported to Hollandia via Balikpapan and Palau in September and October 1943. By April 1944, around 250 had died due to disease, malnutrition, beatings by Japanese and Allied bombing. During the interrogations, the prisoners provided information about their transportation to Hollandia, Allied propaganda, location of radio stations and roads, shipping shortages, attitudes among the Javanese towards the Japanese occupation, the abuse of Allied prisoners of war, the harsh treatment of Indonesian criminals and the recruitment of local labourers. |
