| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 29 April 1944 on Japanese violations of the laws of war. It is a duplicate of RR-72, AWM55 12/50 part 1. This report is part of a compilation prepared for and submitted under oath to the "Commission regarding breaches of the rules of warfare by Japanese forces" (Commonwealth of Australia), 12 March 1944. It contains a record of violations of the laws of war as noted in ATIS documents available to 29 April 1944 including: murders and attempted murders, acts of cannibalism, vivisection, rape, use of Allied uniforms, use of the white flag, the Japanese interpretation of the laws of war in military regulations and by military commanders, prisoners of war, enforcement of the laws of war by Japanese court martial, Japanese opinion of Allied treatment of prisoners of war, Japanese belief in Allied atrocities, belief that Allies killed all prisoners of war, opinion of Japanese prisoners regarding Japanese atrocities, treatment of prisoners of war, interrogation and the location of prisoner-of-war camps. The appendix includes reproductions of captured documents concerning murders and attempted murders by Japanese military personnel, captured interrogation report of Flight Lieutenant William Ellis Newton VC executed at Salamaua on 29 March 1943, two sketches of the location of the execution of between seven and nine Australians at Buna on 13 August 1942 (see RR-32 and RR-32 supplement 1), reproductions of captured documents concerning acts of cannibalism by Japanese military personnel, and reproductions of captured documents concerning the misuse of the white flag. Appended documents also include reproduced passages (not translated) from the diaries of Japanese prisoners, captured documents and intelligence regulations. |
