| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Mokmer on 25 June 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a reference file entitled "Reference on Army sea transport operations", issued on 1 April 1944 by the Department of Military Training and reproduced by Higashi Force (35th Division) and 2929 Force (219th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division) . It contains information on the protection of maritime transport including a glossary of terms, an introduction to the current state of Japanese shipping, the classification and control of vessels, sea transport by the Army, duties of Army shipping personnel, civil transport, communications, embarkation and debarkation. The item also contains a chart on the distances and times for principal transport routes. This document relates to the acute shipping shortages which were beginning to effect the Japanese war effort. Japanese naval commanders were under increasing pressure to maximise the amount of cargo loaded on to available shipping and ensure its safe passage in the face of Allied dominance of the air. |
