Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Biak on 15 June 1944 during the Allied attacks of Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an instruction manual entitled "Reference for sea transport units in carrying out their missions", issued by Shipping Group Staff Section. It contains information on planning for the transportation of troops, managing supplies, concealment and communications. Japan's approach to sea transportation was shaped by the dominance of Allied air power and the fact that Japanese commanders were forced to operate in "areas dominated by enemy airplanes, high speed torpedo boats, destroyers, etc." |
