Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia on 24 April 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a handwritten notebook entitled "R1 Service M" concerning intelligence and fifth column activities during total war, author and unit unknown. The notebook uses two phrases not clearly defined in the text. "R1" is "secret work" along the lines of fifth column and subversive operations. "M" concerns the collection, evaluation and dissemination of information. This item contains information on the use of spies, communication and tapping, interrogation of prisoners of war, propaganda and the objectives and methods of fifth column operations. This document is a general reference notebook, possibly copied from a training manual, most likely during training in Japan and then brought to New Guinea. |
