Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for rank JA145702 of the 80th Infantry Regiment 3rd Battalion Gun Platoon, who was captured in Lembangando near Sio on 12 February 1944. JA145702, a 25 year old Leading Private from Fukuoka Prefecture, was suffering from malaria and separated from his unit during the retreat from Sattelberg. He was shown an Allied propaganda leaflet which urged surrender for more comfortable living. Subsequently, he decided to surrender to Australian troops. During the interrogation, JA145702 provided information on unit organisation, movement, Type 92 and Type 97 airplanes, and pilot training. He had not seen a progapaganda leaflet until a local person showed it to him. Even though he thought he would be killed by the Allies, he decided to give himself up as he was too sick to carry on. Sketch maps of Tachiarai Army Air Training School, Palau, Taikyu, Shimonoseki, Taiden and Pusan are attached. |
