| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147837 of the 54th Line of Communication Garrison Unit, who was captured in Sentani on 11 May 1944. JA147837, a 34 year old Corporal from Osaka, wandered for several days in the hills near Sentani after being wounded during Allied landings at Hollandia. He was then captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147837 provided information on the geography of Palau, health measures taken by troops on Palau, morale in Japan, spiritual discipline and his attitude towards capture, the inadequacy of rations for troops stationed at Palau and Hollandia, shipping movements, the results of Allied aerial attacks on Japanese shipping at Wewak and Hollandia between January and February 1944, and that he had not seen chemical or gas equipment and knew nothing of Japanese intentions to use chemical weapons in New Guinea. |
