| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 23 June 1945 on Japanese violations of the laws of war. This report is a supplement to RR-72 and is part of a compilation prepared for and submitted under oath to the "Commission regarding breaches of the rules of warfare by Japanese forces" (Commonwealth of Australia), 12 March 1944. It contains further records of violations of the laws of war as noted in ATIS documents that had become available from 12 October 1944 to 28 March 1945. This report contains a list of matters on which the Commission required assistance, a comment from the Army Minister on Japanese reactions to Allied investigations, information on execution in the South-West Pacific Area, cannibalism, extreme measures in the Philippines (mopping-up operations, destruction of property, soldiers disguised as civilians, abuse of the flag of the United States of America), evidence of the ill-treatment of prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand railway, evidence of bacterial warfare, the abuse of Allied civilian personnel, evidence of the official instructions for the treatment of prisoners of war, and Japanese military law concerning the punishment of Allied airmen. Appended documents also include reproduced passages (not translated) quoted in the report from the diaries of Japanese prisoners, captured documents and intelligence regulations. |
