| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Sorido on Biak Island on 21 June 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an extract from a notebook on the organisation, disposition and duties of the Ominato Defence Unit, dated between 4 September and 20 October (year not stated). It contains information on security regulations, the strength of the general security unit in Ominato, Japan, the Soya Strait defence area (a channel separating north Hokkaido island from south Sakhalin island, Russia, and connecting the Sea of Japan on the west with the Sea of Okhotsk on the east), protection of sea routes, minelaying and underwater detection, air raid precautions, anti-submarine lookouts and patrols, communication between defence stations and surface vessels and a communication plan for Tsugaru (a channel between Honshu and Hokkaido in northern Japan ). |
