Content: This item consists of multiple copies of a certificate of service and illness issued on 12/10/1941 for 1st Class Private KAWAGUCHI Shôhei, who was attached to the Infantry Gun Detachment of the 41st Division 238th Infantry Regiment. They are wrapped in a mimeographed sheet giving instructions concerning the proper execution of sentry duties. The certificate records details of Pte KAWAGUCHI'S military service, beginning with his induction into the 238th Infantry Regiment in December 1940, his training period in the Yangcheng district of Shanxi Province, China, and his duties as a guard soldier in Yuanqu (Shanxi Province, China). Although the copies and the sentry instruction sheet are bundled inside a paper folder marked "Service Record for Deceased Soldiers," the certificate for Private KAWAGUCHI does not actually record his death; only his admission to an army hospital on 03/10/1941, suffering from dysentery. This item is part of a folder of various materials relating to soldier from the 238th Infantry Regiment. It was captured at Finschhafen in April 1944.
