Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Japanese knowledge of Allied activities, gained through security leaks or espionage. This report is a supplement to RR-65 issued on 29 March 1945. Based on evidence available to ATIS from 5 December 1943 to 2 October 1944, it contains information on Japanese interrogation methods and intelligence elicited from Allied prisoners of war including: evidence of the torture of prisoners, intelligence gained from prisoners, intelligence gathered from captured documents and Allied broadcasts, intelligence derived from natives and Japanese knowledge of Allied intelligence organisations and activities. Fifteen charts and sketches, interspersed throughout the report, show the organisation of the United States 5th Air Force, airfields on Oahu, the armament of a B-24 aircraft, wire obstacles around a pill box, Allied positions in the Torokina River, air patrols in Hawaii, armament of a United States torpedo boat, the organisation of Australian forces and an intelligence report on Allied submarine appearances between 1 and 31 December 1943. The appendix contains a map of the Allied situation to January 1944. The ATIS researchers concluded that although the Japanese relied heavily on information obtained from prisoners of war and captured documents and had successfully obtained information of military value from interrogations, this did not indicate a failure of Allied security because of use of torture. Japanese estimates of Allied landings and Allied air strength were accurate, but their interpretations of broadcasts were erroneous.
