Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia (Jayapura) on 4 June 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a notebook entitled "Lessons from the New Guinea campaign" by Staff Officer Nakamoto, attached to the 51st Division. Although undated, it contains a reference to 18 August 1943. It contains frank commentary and criticism of staff and commanding officers, accounts of actual operations (including a detailed critique of the Nassau Bay landing and Salamaua operations), comments about the tactics of the American and Australian armies, and a list of 12 high-ranking officers killed in the southern area. This document also contains critical comments about dissension between the Japanese Army and Navy, the reasons for the withdrawal from Wau and the failure of Japanese defence of the Buna area.
