Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Lae shortly after the fall of Lae and the Japanese retreat across the Finisterre Ranges. This item contains a field diary and operation orders dated 26 January to 22 April 1943 relating to the construction of the airfields at Wewak and Boram and the overland march from Wewak to Madang via Alexishafen. The item presumably belonged to the Himeda Unit, No. 1 Machine-gun Company, 80th Infantry Regiment. It contains information about the reduction in rations from 26 January 1943, sanitation problems, a Japanese intelligence report on Allied plans to use large bombing formations, and observations about Japanese interaction with local populations.
