| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on the composition of Japanese naval convoys. The enquiry was received on 3 July 1943 and an answer despatched on 8 July 1943. This report contains information on the formation, escort (air and sea) arrangements, evasive tactics, communication and signal regulations, use of lighting and smoke for Japanese naval convoys. It provides an outline of convoys used in operations including: the Battle of Midway (28 May 1942), the route from Rabaul to Buna (20 July 1942), the invasion of Port Moresby (6 August 1942), the route from Rabaul to Giruwa (25 August 1942), Rabaul to Lae (3-7 December 1942) and operations in the Bismarck Sea (28 February 1942 to 3 March 1943). It also contains a map of the area around Lae in March 1943 and Japanese formations at various anchorage points. |
