Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on the location and treatment of British, Australian and Indian prisoners in or around Rabaul for the period January 1942 to October 1943. The enquiry was received on 25 April 1944 and an answer despatched on 4 May 1944. The first part of this report contains a collection of extracts from interrogation reports and bulletins concerning the capture of Australian and British prisoners of war (in New Britain and Singapore) and their movement to Rabaul. Part two contains statements from interrogation reports and diaries concerning the treatment of prisoners including their rations, morale, the type of work they undertook and general living conditions. Section three concerns Indian prisoners of war, their arrival in Rabaul, the type of work they performed and the movement of Indian prisoners from New Britain to New Guinea. The fourth section concerns the movement of prisoners of war to Hainan aboard Montevideo Maru (which sank on 1 July 1942) and also to Japan in August 1942. A concluding section makes a general assessment of the number of prisoners brought to and transported from Rabaul, types of employment, rations and treatment. |
